When it comes to North Korea, accusations usually hold little to no value. Recently however, a public response was issued to deny the accusations which accused North Korean government agents of illegally obtaining over $2 billion through the hacking of international banking services and crypto exchanges.
Yesterday, the Korea Central News Agency (KCNA) denied all the allegations of the massive theft which is said to involve official government agents.
According to the United Nations report, the funds which were stolen all ended up funding North Korean government programs for weapons of mass destruction (WMDs).
The report mentioned that widespread and increasingly sophisticated cyberattacks were used to target crypto exchanges and banks. Back when the report was released, the North Korean mission to the United Nations refused to comment on the report.
North Korea denies any agents were involved
According to the report, the investigation is still ongoing due to the incredibly large group of The Reconnaissance General Bureau (a very high ranking North Korean military agency) members involved. It’s suspected that there were at least 35 instances where DPRK actors targeted crypto exchanges, mining farms and attacked international financial institutions.
The estimated number of victims is unknown, but it was revealed that the attacks happened in more than 17 countries. It’s also reported that after the funds were stolen, they were also laundered “with extreme professionalism” for the shortest time possible in the cyberspace.
The response by KCNA cited a statement from the National Coordination Committee of the DPRK for Anti-Money Laundering and Countering the Finance of Terrorism. The response claimed that led by the United States, other hostile forces are now spreading slanderous rumors:
“Such a fabrication of the hostile forces is nothing more than a nasty word game that only aims to tarnish the image of our Republic and to desperately find more unreliable justification for further sanctions and pressure against the DPRK.”
The statement also referred to the same propaganda campaigns used by the United States to justify the invasion of Iraq to “stop the production or eventual use of WMDs”.
